FAQs
What is lasik?
LASIK laser eye surgery is the most common laser vision correction procedure performed. It lasts approximately 5 to 15 minutes causes minimal discomfort involves a short recovery period and provides fast results.
How it works?
In LASIK surgery the curvature of the cornea the front clear part of the eye is reshaped allowing light entering the eye to focus more precisely on the retina located in the back of the eye. Consequently the eye is able to focus better resulting in clearer sharper vision without eyeglasses or contact lenses.
What to expect ?
In this procedure which lasts approximately 5 to 15 minutes anesthetic drops will first be placed in your eyes. Then your LASIK surgeon will use a laser to form a thin hinged flap in your cornea. The flap is then peeled back so that the corneal tissue underneath can be reshaped using the laser. After the cornea is reshaped the flap is laid back in place. The cornea is then allowed to heal naturally without the need for bandages or stitches.
What after lasik ?
The majority of patients experience dramatic improvement in their vision almost immediately after LASIK surgery. Rest is usually recommended for 24 hours post-surgery. The majority of patients are able to get back to work the next day as healing is quick.
Can I drive home after Lasik Eye Surgery?
No you should arrange to have someone drive you home after your LASIK surgery.
It is common to experience some blurriness and watery eyes after the procedure and after the numbing agent used during the Lasik procedure wears off. It is common for your eyes to be sensitive to light for up to a few hours after the procedure.
A mild sedative may be used during the procedure which may cause drowsiness. We recommend that you arrange for transportation to and from the clinic.
The best course of action is to have a friend or family member drive you home and then you can relax or take a nap.
A clear and protective shield will be placed over your eyes after the Lasik procedure to keep you from rubbing touching or hitting your eyes after your surgery.
During your follow-up and first post-operational exam your eye doctor will check your eyesight to make sure you are authorized todrive without corrective lenses. Ask your doctor to give you paperwork to take to your local Motor Vehicles Authority so that you can have the requires corrective lenses restriction removed from your drivers license.
Will I need to do any Eye Exams after the Lasik Procedure?
It is advisable to have regular scheduled check-ups after your procedure to check the health of your eyes and to ensure that your vision remains stable. Lasik does not correct eye problems including glaucoma and cataracts and so it is important to adhere to your physicians recommendations for follow-ups.
It is recommended to have your eyes checked once a year after your Lasik treatment.
It is important to ensure that you avoid aggressively rubbing the eyes immediately following the procedure as this could result in corneal thinning.
Will Lasik Eye Surgery correct Cataracts?
Lasik surgery will not correct vision problems associated with cataracts. Cataracts will generally worsen over time and may require surgery to halt this process.
Discuss this matter with your physician. Generally Lasik eye surgery is not recommended for people with Cataracts but there are some exceptions to the rule. Consult your physician for details on which is the right path for you.
How old is old enough to have Lasik Eye Surgery?
It is advisable to be 18 and older before you have Lasik corrective eye surgery. It is important that the eyes are stable before the procedure.
